
The Staphylococcus aureus bacterium, which was discovered in the 1880s, is a common cause of painful skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs). The discovery of penicillin in 1928 allowed for the routine and successful treatment of S. aureus infections. However, in the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s, S. aureus developed resistance to penicillin.
